🏈 The Name Behind the Jersey 🏈

Eight NFL quarterbacks, including Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Jalen Hurts, pictured from behind in team uniforms beneath the headline “32 NFL Quarterbacks. 32 Names. 32 Stories.”

The surprising stories behind the first names of all 32 NFL franchise quarterbacks.

Every Sunday, millions of football fans cheer for Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Brock Purdy. Few realize they're also shouting about Roman aristocrats, Hebrew prophets, medieval bakers, and one very stubborn badger.

Coincidence? Absolutely. More fun because of it? Also absolutely.

Grab a game-day snack, find your team, and meet the names calling the plays. Let the names begin.

AFC EAST

🦬 Buffalo Bills — Josh Allen | GOD IS SALVATION From the Hebrew Yehoshua. The biblical Joshua led his people to the Promised Land. Bills fans have been waiting decades for their own Promised Land. Could Josh finally lead them there?

🐬 Miami Dolphins — Malik Willis | KING Arabic for "king." After four seasons as a backup, Willis finally has a throne (thrown?) of his own.

🗽 New England Patriots — Drake Maye | DRAGON From Old English draca, "dragon." Drake also means a male duck, but New England is sticking with the fire-breathing version.

✈️ New York Jets — Geno Smith | WELL-BORN Short for Eugene, from the Greek eugenēs, "of noble birth." Noble roots for a career built the hard way: on second chances.

AFC NORTH

🐦 Baltimore Ravens — Lamar Jackson | OF THE SEA Sometimes linked to the French la mer, “the sea.” A fitting association for a two-time MVP whose fluid moves leave defenders all at sea.

🐅 Cincinnati Bengals — Joe Burrow | GOD WILL INCREASE (BLESSINGS) From the Hebrew Yosef, a name associated with abundance and blessings. Bengals fans are hoping Burrow keeps increasing the one thing that matters most on Sundays: the score.

🐶 Cleveland Browns — Deshaun Watson | GRACED BY GOD A modern American blend of the De- prefix and Shaun, an Irish form of John, from the Hebrew Yochanan, “God is gracious.” A name that celebrates divine favor, with a linguistic journey from ancient Israel to Ireland to Cleveland.

🔨 Pittsburgh Steelers — Aaron Rodgers | Mountain of Strength An ancient Hebrew name of uncertain origin, borne by Moses' older brother. Three thousand years and still going: a name that won't retire, on a quarterback who won't either.

AFC SOUTH

🤠 Houston Texans — C.J. Stroud  | ENGLISH SURNAME Surprise: C.J. stands for Coleridge Bernard Stroud IV. He shares the name with Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. One wrote "Kubla Khan." The other writes his verses in the pocket.

🐎 Indianapolis Colts — Daniel Jones | WISEST OF MEN From the Hebrew Daniyyel. The biblical Daniel survived a night in the lions' den. Every NFL quarterback knows the feeling.

🐆 Jacksonville Jaguars — Trevor Lawrence | GREAT SETTLEMENT From the Welsh Trefor, a place name built from tref, "settlement," and mawr, "great." A name about building something big. Jacksonville approves.

⚔️ Tennessee Titans — Cam Ward | CROOKED NOSE From the Scottish Gaelic cam ("crooked") and sròn ("nose"). Not exactly heroic, but for a quarterback who thrives when plays go sideways, crooked works.

AFC WEST

🐎 Denver Broncos — Bo Nix | HANDSOME A short, stylish name associated with the meaning “handsome.” Two letters, one syllable, and plenty of charm. Bo proves that good things come in small packages—including names.

🏹 Kansas City Chiefs — Patrick Mahomes | NOBLEMAN From the Latin Patricius, a member of ancient Rome's ruling class. Three Super Bowl rings later, the aristocracy holds.

🏴☠️ Las Vegas Raiders — Kirk Cousins | CHURCH A Scots and northern English word for “church,” ultimately from the Greek kyriakon, “the Lord's house.” On Sundays, Cousins trades the pews for the pocket and the congregation for a roaring stadium.

⚡ Los Angeles Chargers — Justin Herbert | JUST, FAIR From the Latin justus. In a sport ruled by referees, justice makes a welcome teammate.

NFC EAST

🤠 Dallas Cowboys — Dak Prescott | FRIENDS, ALLIES Short for Dakota, the name of the Dakota people, usually translated as "friends" or "allies." Fitting for a quarterback whose whole job is getting eleven men on the same page.

🗽 New York Giants — Jaxson Dart | SON OF JACK A modern spelling of Jackson. Jack comes from John, and John from the Hebrew Yochanan. Old name, new spelling.

🦅 Philadelphia Eagles — Jalen Hurts | MODERN AMERICAN Popularized by basketball star Jalen Rose, whose mother blended family names to create it. Proof a name doesn't need centuries of history to make history

🪖 Washington Commanders — Jayden Daniels | THANKFUL A modern American name often linked to the Hebrew Jadon, traditionally interpreted as “thankful.” With his dazzling speed and remarkable playmaking ability, Daniels has given Washington fans plenty to be thankful for.

NFC NORTH

🐻 Chicago Bears — Caleb Williams | WHOLE-HEARTED From the Hebrew Kalev, traditionally linked to the word for "dog," the original symbol of loyalty. The biblical Caleb was one of only two spies who insisted the Promised Land could be won. Bears fans know the type.

🦁 Detroit Lions — Jared Goff | DESCENDANT From the Hebrew Yered, traditionally associated with “descent.” Goff may have inherited an ancient name, but he's busy building a legacy of his own in Detroit.

🧀 Green Bay Packers — Jordan Love | FLOWING DOWN From the Hebrew Yarden, the river that flows down to the Dead Sea. Love's passes flow downfield. It writes itself.

🛡️ Minnesota Vikings — Kyler Murray | BOWMAN Linked to the Dutch surname Cuyler, traditionally associated with a bowman or archer. An appropriately athletic name for a quarterback who knows how to hit his targets—and keep defenders guessing.

NFC SOUTH

🦅 Atlanta Falcons — Michael Penix Jr. | WHO IS LIKE GOD? From the Hebrew Mikha'el, the name of the archangel who leads heaven's army. A strong résumé for a quarterback leading the charge.

🐈 Carolina Panthers — Bryce Young | ANCIENT, ORIGIN UNCERTAIN From Brice, after the Latin Bricius, whose deeper roots are lost to history. Compact and battle-tested, like the man himself.

⚜️ New Orleans Saints — Tyler Shough | TILE MAKER An English occupational surname for someone who laid roof tiles. Saints fans are hoping he raises the roof.

🏴☠️ Tampa Bay Buccaneers — Baker Mayfield | BREAD MAKER A medieval trade name for the village baker. This one cooks up touchdowns, and he's got plenty of rise.

NFC WEST

🐦 Arizona Cardinals — Jacoby Brissett | FROM JACOB, "HE WILL TRIUMPH" A variation of Jacob, from the Hebrew Ya'aqov. The biblical Jacob was born gripping his brother's heel and fought for position ever after. A journeyman quarterback can relate.

🐏 Los Angeles Rams — Matthew Stafford | GIFT OF GOD From the Hebrew Mattityahu. Rams fans, watching their veteran quarterback, won't argue.

⛏️ San Francisco 49ers — Brock Purdy | BADGER From the Old English brocc. Small, stubborn and fearless, the badger doesn't care where it was drafted. Neither does Mr. Irrelevant.

🦅 Seattle Seahawks — Sam Darnold | GOD HAS HEARD From the Hebrew Shemu'el. After years of hearing the doubters, Darnold finally heard something better: a Super Bowl parade.
